1st Day on the Job
First day on the job and we were exposed to a lot. Woke up around 7:30 due to the fact that I had already washed up last night. We ate breakfast and then walked to work. Yeah, we walked. Lol It was a new experience; walking to work alongside the hustle and bustle of taxis, vans, and any other vehicle or in some cases animals on the roadway. It was a 20 minute walk but it was great as I am in a new place and environment. Just taking it all in. The hospital I work at is beautiful and is a very different contrast to the hospitals in the States. It is a very “open” hospital; meaning its open to the elements. At least for the first three floors of the ten-floor structure. Cornwall is the largest hospital in the Western region of Jamaica and services the likes of four parishes (counties) and other countries that don’t have the same hospital services as Cornwall. We had a tour by our mentor of the facilities in the hospital. Services ranged from OB/GYN, Surgical, Medical, Pharmacy, to Radiology, Emergency, Orthopedics, and Pediatrics. We were informed of the ups and downs of the Jamaican healthcare system including Jamaican residents having access to free health services. During our first day on the job, we also experienced a first hand Human Anatomy class as we sat in on an autopsy of a 92 year-old man who died of natural causes, a 13 year-old who was stabbed to death, and a mid 40 year-old man who was shot to death. It was a great and unforgettable experience as I was able to view an actual body and experience the life of a pathologist and a medical student as well. Opportunities like that would definately not present themselves in the States due to strict laws (HIPPA) on the books. After work, we walked around the neighborhood, ran up a hill๐๐, and chilled with a fellow co-worker. These first two days have been awesome and I await more memories to be made. Be Easy Mon!
The Atlanta Greek Picnic seems like the pinnacle event of everyone’s summer. Oh, okay.
